The “Tanáhá” Collection

Tanáhá:
(Da-Nah-Ha)

A humpbacked shaggy-haired wild ox native to North America. Also know as the American Bison. Tanáha comes from the Sáhnis language of the Arikara tribe residing on the Fort Berthold Indian reservation

The Beadwork Artist

“Before I bead, I pray and through my prayer I find connection to my home, my community, my reservation, and my herd. Before I beaded these I had to help a close friend move back to her ancestral homelands.

The dragon fly represents positive change, the mountains, and direction symbol act as a map for her way back home, the blue background represents the rivers that they might help guide us back to the ones we love.” – Naji Haska

We are a herd like Tanáhá, and just like Tanáhá we must each find our own path. We come and go in each other lives but we are never forgotten by our herd. This collection seeks to reclaim my father's Arikara name, as I find meaning in what it looks like to have kinship in both the workshop and the world.
